How to cope with Teenage Acne Angst?

Teenager

Teenager - Many people under estimate the seriousness of acne due to it being so common.

If your loved one is experiencing problems with acne you may feel helpless in ways to support them through their skin problems. Do not fret, there are ways in which you can help a loved one feel better about their skin.

Acne is a common skin disease that affects the majority of the population at some point in their lives. Acne is prevalent in young people, because during adolescence hormones cause the skin’s oils glands to become more active and this can produce spots.

Many people under estimate the seriousness of acne due to it being so common. However, acne should not be taken lightly as the skin disease can result in various physical and emotional problems. Acne can be very painful for cystic acne sufferers and lead to scarring of the skin if left untreated. Acne can increase levels of anxiety and in extreme cases can lead to clinical depression.

Here are some simple tips to support your loved one or friend through acne:

  • Age does not matter. Do not say to your loved one “That everyone your age gets spots”. This simple will not wash (excuse the pun) with most acne sufferers. Most young people will be able to think of several friends that “have never had a spot in their lives” and “have perfect skin”. It is true, some people have lucky genes and never get spots.
  • Share your own experience. If you have previously suffered from acne why not share your own experience? For example, explain to them that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that they will not have to suffer this horrible disease forever. You are living and walking proof that acne is just temporary and not permanent. They need to hear this advice right now.
  • Acne is treatable. A common mistake by acne sufferers is to leave their acne untreated, as they hope their acne will eventually clear. There are plenty of acne treatments and help available, from over-the-counter remedies like benzoyl peroxide to strong prescription drugs like accutane. Explain to your loved one, that although acne treatment might not clear your skin instantly, it will make you feel better about yourself as you are taking action against acne.
