Can you drink alcohol whilst taking Accutane/Isotretinoin?

Accutane treatment can make you feel drowsy and dizzy. These side effects increase when you drink alcohol so it generally recommended that you should avoid alcohol intake.

Drinking alcohol during Accutane treatment tends to make you feel the effects (feel intoxicated) more than usual. Also drinking on Accutane can make hangovers worse.

From my research, the advice from dermatologists varies about whether you should or should not drink booze:

  • Some dermatologists never even mention alcohol when prescribing Accutane.
  • Some dermatologists advise no more than 4-6 units per week (not to be consumed all at once!)
  • Others dermatologists warn that drinking can put extra strain on your liver, because it has the same effect as too much vitamin A in the body. During Accutane treatment you will usually have blood test to monitor your liver.

In my opinion you should not drink excessively due to the potential liver damage and the possibility of a worse hangover than usual is more reason not drink whilst on Accutane - it is just not worth it.

What are your experiences of drinking alcohol and taking Accutane?

They say the medicine stays in your system for one month after your done taking it, so does this mean that you shouldn’t drink for one month after stopping the medication?

I have noticed similar symptoms. I do not more than 3-4 beers, and already feel intoxicated (@ ~5%/volume, 12oz can). I do not recommend anyone drink hard alcohol or grain under the prescription of any Isotretinoin.

I’ve been on roaccutane since December & have to admit that I still go out & party like there’s no tomorrow. At first I tried going out & not drinking which I struggled with, so gradually every time I went out it got more & more.
I’ve not suffered with hangovers or felt ill due to it but do also tend to drink a little during the week too.
